1.                  Why the University of León?

 Catedral de León

The University of León offers Spanish Language Courses at all levels. It is nearly 50 years since we started providing this service and our long established experience makes us one of the pioneering institutions in this field in Spain.

The ancient city of León, which dates back to the year 68 BC, is an important cross-roads in the Northern Spain. It is also a prosperous, fast-developing, modern provincial capital which has proudly preserved all the charms of a very important and rich historical past.

Today, with a population of 150.000, León is a manageable and hospitable city for visitors. The city has succeeded in combining the old with the new beautifully. In the more modern parts, there are all the facilities of any modern capital, including wide avenues, public gardens and parks and a modern University campus. Personal safety and very low crime rates are two features worth mentioning about our attractive city.

The city of León has got something for everyone. Cultural events are ongoing throughout the year (popular fiestas, recitals, sport competitions, theatre, concerts, cinema, art exhibitions and night life). There is also a relaxed atmosphere in the numerous cafés and restaurants around the city.

Four of them are equivalent to our beginning (SPAN1014 and SPAN1024) and intermediate(SPAN2014 and SPAN2024) and two are higher levels (SPAN3003 and SPAN3013). In the superior levels students continue to expand their vocabulary, review grammar, and are introduced to various uses of Spanish, for example, literature and journalism.  Summer courses consist of a minimum of 80 class contact hours. The University Language Centre leads an additional 30-40 hours of visits to cultural and historical sites in and around León. The University of León will assist students in preparing the documentation needed for obtaining academic credit in the United States Arkansas Tech University will credit courses at the University of León provided that students achieve a letter grade of C or better.  Also there are courses for teachers of Spanish who feel the need to expand and update their linguistic abilities.
