Engl 5233: Literary Criticism

D. Wilson
11:00 a.m. 12:35 p.m.
WPN 239

Have you ever had to write an essay about a piece of literature and found that you had no idea how to begin, no idea how to get an idea? Have you ever had those teachers who ask questions like: what does the guitar symbolize in this poem?--and their question might as well have been: I'm thinking of a number from 1 to 10; what is it? Then this is the class for you! We are going to look at approaches to reading and analyzing literature: post-structuralist, psychoanalytic, Marxist, feminist, new historicist, and others. Since we're covering this material in a brief five weeks, we won't have time to read novels or other lengthy literary texts but will rather read readings of texts most of you will already be familiar with.
