Censorship and the Great Depression

• Scandals of early 1920s involving Mary Pickford, Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle, Wallace Reid, and William Desmond Taylor led to creation of Hays Office for self regulation.

• 1930, the Hollywood Production Code was written

• 1932, Hollywood felt the impact of the Depression

• 1933, Catholic Legion of Decency threatened a boycott

• 1934, Joseph Breen named head of Production Code Administration. MPPDA members were required to submit films for PCA seal of approval before release.

• Began offering bargains of double features, cartoons, trailers, newsreels, and games.
