• Japan was the only other country with a film industry based on the American-style studio system. Primary difference was greater importance of directors in Japanese system.

  • Nikkatsu (1912) Ichikawa
  • Shochiku (1920) Ozu
  • Toho (1930s) Kurosawa, Godzilla, and TohoScope
  • Daiei (1940s) Mizoguchi

• Japanese films can be divided into two broad genres:

  • jidai-geki -- period or costume films
  • gendai-geki -- films of contemporary life
