English 2053: Instruction Set

Preparatory Reading
Before completing this assignment, read pages 30-37, "Instruction Set" and pages 140-141 "Lists in Technical Writing."

Tip: This reading assignment provides you with some important suggestions, but be careful to note that the online version of this assignment described in "procedure" below, is considerably different from the assignment as described in the text.

Procedure
For this assignment write an informal report that would enable someone to construct the figure at the bottom of the Instruction Set Graphics One, Instruction Set Graphics Two or Instruction Set Graphic Three. (Click on the underlined link to view the pages.) Imagine that the twelve shapes at the top of the Instruction Set Graphics pages are flat objects on a smooth surface. Your instructions should enable someone to arrange these twelve objects so they exactly match Figure 1 at the bottom of the Instruction Set Graphics One page or Figure 2 at the bottom of the Instruction Set Graphics Two page. Be sure that you let me know if you are writing instructions for building Figure 1 or Figure 2.

You instruction set should have an initial section that describes the set of items precisely and gives your readers any other preparatory information that will help them complete the task correctly. Another section should include numbered steps that will allow your readers to construct Figure 1, 2 or 3. A final section should give your readers a chance to check their work, but remember that you cannot use visuals for this final check or anywhere else in your report. Use headings to identify the sections of your report.

Tip: Be precise about placement and alignment. Telling someone to place a piece "to the right" of another is not adequate.

Objective
In addition to providing useful practice in precise, utilitarian writing, this assignment introduces the usefulness of lists and syntactic parallelism.
