Preparatory Reading
Before completing this response, read 142-165
("Graphics"). You also might want to look at the presentations that
I use in class on graphics. These presentations are old, but for the most part, they include the same information
that is in the text.
Your Assignment
Describe what graphic you would use in each
of the following situations and explain why.
- You have calculated the average high daily temperature
in Russellville for each month of the year, and you want to show how
those 12 monthly high temperature averages relate to the annual average
high temperature reading.
- You are reporting on sales of five products that
your company manufactures. Most importantly, you need to show the
trend of overall sales during the past two years. Secondarily, you
would like to indicate what portion of those sales resulted from sales
of each of the five products.
- You are writing a proposal to fund a new waste management
plan for your company. As part of your proposal you want to include
a graphic representation of how the waste disposal process would work
if your proposal were approved.
- As part of a sales brochure for a new bowling ball
that your company is producing, you want a graphic that shows the
innovative internal weighting system that is an important selling
point for the ball.
Tip: You do not
need to create the graphics. A brief, but clear, explanation of what
you would use is sufficient.
Objective
This assignment is designed to introduce to
the range of graphics that are used in technical documents. Of course,
such a brief examination cannot pretend to be thorough, but I do expect
that you will learn the basic qualities that make graphics effective
as well as the general strengths and weaknesses of different types of
graphics.
