My Quiet Place
As a computer science major, I spend a large part of time on my home computer. Therefore, I have focused on having a comfortable, yet functional, space in which I work. Attached to the monitor are pictures of my children grinning from ear to ear. Propped against the monitor is a picture of my son standing on his head and laughing hysterically. Partially covering this picture is a poem my mother gave me. Beneath the glass-covered desktop, more snapshots of my children, husband, and family are displayed. A small lamp sets on the desk to softly light the pictures and aid in keeping the glare on the screen at a minimum. Just beyond the monitor are two large windows that give me an unhindered view of the yard and also give my eyes a vacation from the screen. The desk upon which the monitor, keyboard and mouse are perched was my grandfather’s desk at which he spent much time. A simple, black phone is within reach as well as the printer and scanner. Scrap paper is located near the phone and pens, pencils and highlighters can be found in the cup holder that my son made at vacation bible school. A calendar and clock hang on the wall behind the monitor as well as more pictures of my children. The dining room table is perpendicular to the desk and provides ample space for papers and books. Reference manuals and textbooks are arranged on the table and partially block the view through the windows. Altogether my workspace takes up a corner of the dining room. All I need is within reach, and all those I love surround the space in which I work.
